Colorado Gov.-elect Weiser to inherit Medicaid growth cap fight
Colorado Gov.-elect Phil Weiser named a transition team, including honorary co-chairs Ken Salazar, Roy Romer and Federico Peña, after winning the governor's race Tuesday. Weiser said he faces a "very long reading list," including outgoing Gov. Jared Polis's final budget proposal, which includes a strict growth cap on the state's Medicaid program that healthcare advocates say would mean hundreds of millions of dollars in cuts to existing services. Weiser pointed to an ongoing Medicaid commission analyzing the issue and said he looks forward to that conversation, noting "real growth" in the program warrants scrutiny. The budget process will be completed by Weiser and the Legislature's Joint Budget Committee, with a final vote typically held in late March; Weiser will be inaugurated Jan. 12, 2027.
