Senate Democrats' Report Alleges Nursing Home Fraud, Favoritism Under Trump
A Senate Finance Committee minority report released Thursday by four Democratic senators alleges that nursing home operators and politically connected investors have profited through financial schemes while federal oversight weakened and understaffing persisted. The report cites rollbacks of the federal staffing mandate and an ownership transparency rule, whose Jan. 1, 2026 disclosure deadline was indefinitely postponed, allowing facilities to keep receiving federal funding without revealing corporate or private equity ownership structures. It also highlights presidential pardons or commutations for three nursing home owners convicted of health care and tax fraud, and notes nearly one-third of facilities are behind on required inspections. LeadingAge CEO Katie Smith Sloan called the findings "reprehensible" and backed calls for stronger ownership transparency.
