Milwaukee Clinic Seeks $400K County Funding After Rival's Closure

Health Connections Inc., a Glendale-based free and charitable clinic, asked the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors for $400,000 in the 2027 budget after absorbing roughly 500 new patients when City on a Hill clinic abruptly closed in March. The clinic primarily serves uninsured patients who earn too much for Medicaid but cannot afford private coverage, and it currently receives no county funding, though it has received past county health department grants. Supervisors will decide on the request amid a projected $50.8 million county budget gap. Clinic leaders warn of a looming surge in uninsured patients as federal Medicaid work requirements take effect in 2027 and enhanced ACA premium tax credits have expired, with Wisconsin's health department estimating 250,000 residents are at risk of losing coverage.

Why it mattersFree and charitable clinics are becoming de facto safety-net providers for the coverage gap population that federal Medicaid work requirements and lapsed ACA subsidies are expected to widen, yet they operate without dedicated public funding streams or care-coordination support.
