Michigan Panel Debates Causes, Fixes for Rising Health Costs
At the inaugural Bridge Michigan Issues Summit in Detroit, four healthcare experts discussed why Michigan healthcare costs are surging and what might rein them in. Panelists pointed to administrative waste from a fragmented multi-payer system, expensive new drugs, hospital consolidation, and rising numbers of uninsured residents, including people who have lost Medicaid or commercial coverage, as drivers of cost and worse health outcomes. The discussion grew out of Bridge Listens, a yearlong resident survey ahead of the 2026 election in which more than one in five respondents named healthcare costs a top concern. Panelists offered ideas including expanded access to GLP-1 drugs to curb chronic disease costs, while disagreeing over whether hospital consolidation helps or hurts affordability.
