IU Health's $4.7B Indianapolis Campus Reaches 80% Completion

IU Health's downtown Indianapolis academic medical campus, now budgeted at $4.74 billion, is about 80% complete and on track for a December 2027 opening, according to Becker's Hospital Review. The flagship IU Health Medical Center, a $2.49 billion, 2.56 million-square-foot facility with 860 private rooms, will consolidate high-acuity adult care from the system's Methodist and University hospitals. The project coincides with a systemwide Epic implementation and a new Fort Wayne hospital, both launching May 1, 2027, contributing to a drop in IU Health's operating margin to 1.9% in Q2 2026 from 5.4% a year earlier. System executives say the heavy one-time capital spending is proceeding as planned and is expected to yield roughly $50 million in annual facility savings once complete.

Why it mattersLarge nonprofit health systems' capital spending and margin pressure during major facility consolidations can affect provider capacity and pricing leverage relevant to state Medicaid managed care networks in Indiana.
