UNM Health Reopens Clinics After Cyberattack Disrupted Care
UNM Health System in Albuquerque resumed regularly scheduled clinic appointments and procedures on Oct. 27 after a cybersecurity incident forced it to divert ambulances and cancel all clinic appointments the day before. The system, which operates New Mexico's only level 1 trauma center, began restoring operations in phases starting at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 26, with hospitals UNM Hospital and Sandoval Regional Medical Center remaining open throughout while IT security teams worked to resolve the incident. Nonessential staff and students at the health sciences campus were sent home during the disruption. UNM Health said it will work with patients to reschedule missed appointments and procedures.
Why it mattersHospitals and health systems serving Medicaid patients, including safety-net and trauma centers, face mounting operational and financial exposure from cyberattacks that can halt care delivery and billing for days.
