Hospital Systems Shift From Cost Cuts to Growth Ahead of 2027
Becker's Hospital Review reports that health system executives, including leaders at Banner Health, Trinity Health, Sutter Health and Hillsdale Hospital, say cost cutting alone can no longer sustain their finances heading into 2027. Systems like Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic and CommonSpirit are concentrating cuts in administrative, IT and revenue cycle functions rather than bedside care, while restructuring management layers and outsourcing or insourcing back-office operations. The pressure stems partly from HR 1's 2027 Medicaid work requirements and more frequent eligibility checks for expansion adults, alongside tightening federal Medicaid financing rules. Rising uninsured rates and surging bad debt and charity care, confirmed by Commonwealth Fund and Kaufman Hall data, are compressing hospital margins and pushing systems toward growth strategies alongside continued administrative cost discipline.
