Hospitals Expand Leadership Layoffs Amid Financial Strain in 2026
Becker's Hospital Review reports that at least 13 hospitals and health systems have cut leadership or management roles in 2026, with six such layoffs in September alone compared to eight for all of 2025. Recent cuts include Montrose Regional Health eliminating 77 roles on Oct. 12, Dartmouth Health laying off 124 employees and restructuring executive roles, and reductions at City of Hope, Care New England, Intermountain Health, One Brooklyn Health, and rural system North Star Health Alliance, which is pursuing Chapter 11 protection. Systems cite inadequate reimbursement rates, rising labor and supply costs, uncompensated care, and workforce constraints as drivers. The trend spans academic, safety-net, and rural systems across multiple states.
