For-Profit Hospital Chains Post Mixed Q3 2026 Earnings

Becker's Hospital Review reports that HCA, Tenet, Community Health Systems and Universal Health Services each posted third-quarter 2026 results, with mixed performance across the group. Tenet posted the highest operating margin (31.1%) and widened margins year over year, boosted partly by one-time revenue from the early termination of Conifer's revenue-cycle contract with CommonSpirit Health. HCA posted the highest net income ($1.58 billion) despite a slightly narrower margin, while CHS swung to an $86 million net loss as payor mix and patient acuity trends fell short of expectations. UHS also saw operating income and margin decline year over year.

Why it mattersHospital system margin pressure and payor-mix shifts signal potential downstream effects on provider contracting and reimbursement negotiations with Medicaid managed care plans.
