Community Health Systems Posts Q3 Net Loss Amid Divestitures
Community Health Systems reported a third-quarter net loss of $86 million, reversing a $130 million profit a year earlier, as revenue fell 11% to $2.8 billion. The 59-hospital for-profit system cited ongoing hospital divestitures, an unfavorable payer mix, higher medical specialist costs and supplemental reimbursement program expenses as key drags on performance. CEO Kevin Hammons said volume trends improved sequentially but payer mix and patient acuity did not develop as expected given the broader economic environment. CHS lowered its full-year 2026 guidance to $11.3-$11.5 billion in revenue and a diluted net loss of $1.60 to $1.70 per share.
Why it mattersCHS's reference to unfavorable payer mix and supplemental reimbursement program costs signals ongoing financial strain tied to Medicaid and uninsured patient volumes at its hospitals, a trend other state Medicaid agencies and MCOs should watch for provider network stability.
